Dear supporters,
Autumn is here, the rain is back, and the Hostile Environment is showing no signs of slowing down. But neither are we!
Since our last newsletter, we have been busy working on our International Students campaign. This is such an important campaign for us, especially since international students are so often overlooked in migration advocacy.
That’s why we are really pleased to announce the launch of our International Students Report, which explores the many barriers that international students face amidst an increasingly anti-migrant environment. We have accompanied this report with two guides for international students- one on education, and one on private renting- as well as a survey for international students so that we can gain feedback on the information in the guides.
In the meantime, we have also been continuing our work on decolonising migration. We are really excited to share our upcoming organising day, and we invite communities in Glasgow to join us in building local resistance to the racist structures that keep our communities oppressed.
We are really eager for our newsletter to be shaped by our audiences, especially those with lived experience of migration. If you would like to give us some feedback or share your opinions on what you want to see in our newsletter moving forward, then please email [email protected]
Thank you for your ongoing support, and we hope you continue to stand with us in pursuit of justice for all migrants.
In solidarity,
The MRN Team
International Students

New report
Our new Hostile Office report explores the commodification and dehumanisation that international students face.
International students are treated as an income stream: their wellbeing and financial security are secondary to universities’ priority of collecting tuition fees. Harsh immigration policies mean that many struggle to meet stringent financial obligations, and are often unable to bring family with them. International students also experience lack of financial and wellbeing support from universities, heavy surveillance, restrictive immigration checks and threats of being reported to the Home Office. Another significant issue is problematic agents and recruitment practices, where students have been asked to pay additional fees or have been subjected to scams.
Our research also found that international students suffered mental ill-health and were subjected to discrimination across every day life.
Alongside an end to the Hostile Environment, the NRPF condition and dehumanising anti-migrant rhetoric, we call for
better financial and wellbeing support for international students.

Know Your Rights Guide- Education
Alongside our report, we have released a Know Your Rights Guide for International students on the theme of education. This resource provides information on key areas such as recruitment, enrolment, housing and surveillance.
Guide to Private Renting
We have also collaborated with London Renters’ Union (LRU) to create a Guide for international students that will help them to navigate the private rental sector. This includes information and advice on issues such as poor housing conditions, excessive costs, and harassment from landlords.
Survey
We have also launched a survey for international students to provide feedback on our two guides. The feedback will be used to develop our materials so they can better serve international students and their needs. You can access the survey here.
