To mark Refugee Week, Poplar Union has programmed a week of events to raise awareness in support of refugees, partnering with Play for Progress and E5 Roasthouse (who donate 30% of their profits to refugee organisations). These events hope to inspire, inform and resonate with audiences.
Play for Progess present:
- Music and Poetry from Ruth Padel & Anna MacDonald – Monday 18 June at 7pm. £4 / £2 conc.
- Rookes (musician) Workshop & Performance – Wednesday 20 June at 7pm, £4 / £2 conc. /
- Allies in Arts for Refugee Week (a night of music in support of young refugees, headlined by Djanan Turan) – Saturday 23 June at 7pm, £5 / £3 conc.
Poplar Union’s film series, POP-Corn presents, screens Gianfranco Rosi’s Fire at Sea, which seeks to capture life on the Italian island of Lampedusa, a frontline in the European “migrant crisis.” Screening: Wednesday 13 June at 7.30pm. Tickets are free, but all donations on the night will go to the Refugee Council.
Other screenings include: Windows of Displacement, Thursday 21 June at 7.30pm. Tickets are £9 / £7 conc. / £10 OTD
E5’s Iranian Film & Supper Club (showing Majid Majid’s acclaimed Children of Heaven, nominated for the 1998 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film) is on Friday 22 June at 7pm. Tickets are £18 and includes a drink.
